Mutts on the Move

Big adventures. Little breaks. Happier dogs.

Mutts on the Move is ACS’s field trip program that gives shelter dogs a break from kennel life. Take a dog for a walk, explore a dog-friendly spot, or grab a pup cup from Starbucks!

You don’t have to foster or make a long-term commitment. Just spend a few hours together, then bring your adventure buddy back to ACS.🐾

Why Field Trips Matter

Shelter life can be stressful. Getting out of the kennel gives dogs a chance to:

  • Decompress and enjoy a change of scenery.
  • Experience new sights, smells, and environments.
  • Receive one-on-one attention and enrichment.
  • Show more of their personality outside the shelter.

Your observations also help us learn more about each dog’s needs and personality, which can help us find their ideal home.

How It Works

Choose a dog: Contact ACS to find out which dogs are eligible and get matched with a good fit.
Plan your outing: Choose a dog-friendly destination that suits the dog’s needs.
Enjoy your adventure: Keep things positive, follow ACS safety guidelines, and take plenty of notes about your dog’s experience.
Return to ACS: Bring the dog back at the agreed-upon time and share how it went.
Emergency contacts: At pickup, ACS will provide emergency contact numbers in case questions, concerns, or urgent situations arise during your outing.

Where Can We Go?

Keep outings simple, positive, and appropriate for the individual dog. Here are a few ideas around Louisville:

  • Parks and trails: On-leash areas like Tom Sawyer Park, Beckley Creek Park or Cherokee Park.
  • Pet-friendly stores: Visit a pet-friendly business, checking its current pet policy before arrival.
  • Starbucks: Treat your adventure buddy to a pup cup, if appropriate for their dietary needs.
  • Neighborhood strolls: Enjoy a quiet walk, sniffari, or peaceful spot to people-watch.
  • Or maybe you just want to go take a nap back at your house and let them feel at home.

The goal isn’t to pack the day with activities. Sometimes a quiet walk and a little extra attention are all a dog needs.

Interested in an Overnighter?

A successful field trip may lead to an optional overnighter, giving a dog more time to decompress in a home environment. All overnighters must be coordinated and approved by ACS.

Before considering one, think about everyone in your household, including children, roommates, and personal pets. Not every dog is kid-friendly, dog-friendly, or cat-friendly, and field trip approval does not guarantee compatibility.

Contact ACS before introducing a shelter dog to any personal pet. Get approval before attempting an introduction.

Ensure you have a safe way to separate the shelter dog from personal pets and household members when needed.

ACS will help determine whether an overnighter is appropriate for the dog and your household.

You can make a difference with a same-day outing alone. Overnight stays are completely optional!

Important Safety Guidelines

  • Always leash your dog. Dogs must remain securely leashed and under your control.
  • No off-leash dog parks, dog bars, or off-leash interactions. Do not allow greetings or play with unfamiliar dogs.
  • Never assume compatibility. Not every field trip dog is dog-friendly, cat-friendly, or kid-friendly.
  • Respect their comfort level. Avoid overwhelming environments, give others space, and end the outing if the dog becomes stressed.
  • Follow ACS guidance. Use approved equipment and contact ACS with questions or concerns.
  • If you’re unsure whether an activity or destination is appropriate, ask ACS before heading out.

    Ready to Get Moving?

You don’t have to adopt or foster to make a difference. A few hours away from the shelter can provide enrichment, reduce stress, and help a dog enjoy being a dog.

One outing can make their day.
